Residential Fire Safety Awareness Program
Residential fire safety is essential to protect lives and property in case of unexpected emergencies. We Jash Consulting Services, provide a basic Residential Awareness Program that educates on simple precautions, proper planning, and awareness can significantly reduce fire risks at home. Being prepared with safety measures and an escape plan ensures quick, calm action during a fire.
1. Escape Plans
- Create a fire escape plan with two exits from every room, and ensure everyone knows them.
- Practice fire drills regularly so all family members respond quickly in an emergency.
- Keep escape routes clear and have a meeting point outside the home for safety checks.
- Verify that smoke alarms are installed to provide early detection and warning, so you’ll have enough time to execute your escape plan.
- Verify that doors located in your path of travel do not require a key to open from the inside.
- Take note of whether any disabled or elderly residents will require evacuation assistance.
- Remain outside until notified by the fire department that it is safe to re-enter the building

2. Smoke alarm
Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including in storage areas, electrical rooms, bedrooms, and outside sleeping areas. Regular checks and tests are essential to ensure that the smoke alarms are functioning properly.
3. Practicing safe cooking and kitchen fire safety
Safe cooking habits are key to preventing kitchen fires, one of the leading causes of home fires. Never leave cooking unattended, keep flammable items away from the stove, and use timers as reminders. Always have a lid nearby to smother small grease fires and keep a fire extinguisher within reach.
4. Using electrical appliances responsibly
Use electrical appliances responsibly by avoiding overloading outlets and unplugging devices when not in use. Regularly check cords for damage and ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating and fire hazards.
5. Use fire extinguishers and maintain them properly
Keep fire extinguishers in accessible areas and learn how to use them with the PASS technique (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep). Inspect them regularly to ensure they’re charged, undamaged, and ready for use in an emergency.
6. Evacuating safely from smoke
If there’s smoke, stay low to the ground where the air is cleaner and crawl to the nearest exit. Close doors behind you to slow the spread of fire, and never go back inside once you’ve evacuated.
